LS Flamenco at Smithfield High School!
Bringing the art of Flamenco dance to the classroom.
Last Spring (May 2018) we brought our LS Flamenco for Schools program to Smithfield High School and had lots of fun! Lora Calisa, the Spanish teacher of the school, won a “Golden Apple Aware” and decided to invite us to join her group and bring flamenco dance. Our wonderful flamenco instructors visited the school to bring the joy of dance to the classroom and about 70 students from different classes enjoyed the experience.
For most of them, this was their first experience with Flamenco. Some of them knew about this art form, but the majority of them didn’t´t even know there was such thing as flamenco dance. They learned not only about flamenco but about a new culture, from a foreign country, Spain. They go immersed into a new culture through movement and dance!
Some students were super excited from the very beginning, while others needed a little bit of time feeling the energy and enthusiasm of our LS Flamenco instructors to fully engage the experience. By the end of the workshop 100% of them were dancing and closing the experience with a huge Ole!
All school´s professors, including Lora, were really grateful because this workshop was the only way these kids could experience what this culture and dance was about. We could say that some students will definitely continue learning flamenco in the future!
Thank you Lora for making this happen.
